The Bicycle in Japan
One of the first things that foreigners arriving in Japan are often surprised at the vast number of bicycles seen may be careening through the streets and sidewalks. Almost everyone, from grandmothers to well-dressed entrepreneurs on their way to the office with a "Jitensha" (Bicycle) as a form of mainstream transportation. Whether employed for the removal of children from kindergarten, pedal to the nearest railway station or on the way to work or university, the bicycle has become an integral part of Japanese society. Even the police to see which can often make nightly rounds on bicycles will draw them in terms of navigating the narrow network of roads, including most Japanese cities and towns. The two wheels are indeed everywhere, and in such a degree dedicated to that huge parking areas near most shopping malls and train stations only to accommodate bicycles.
